How does a Chinese the ivories function? What characters are represented and if so...?

There's no such piece as a "chinese" keyboard. If you progress to China, you'll see they're all still using standard QWERTY layouts.



Chinese is typed out software-side, mostly using Microsoft's Global IME. Basically, users type in romanizations of chinese characters and a account of all chinese words beside that rominzation pop up in a bit menu. The user selects the one he / she designed and moves on.



So, it looks like this:

I type contained by "ni". A menu asks me if I meant 你 or 呢 or 妳. I required the first one, so I select it and move on.



Nowadays, algorithms are fitting enough that the computer can guess at the word you looked-for based on context and be correct 80% of the time, which greatly speeds up typing.
